Failure analysis and prevention in powertrain systems

Abstract In powertrain systems, engine components have been imposed to cyclic loadings. Therefore, the utilized material in such components should have enough strength under such high-cycle fatigue, low-cycle fatigue, and thermomechanical fatigue conditions or a combination of these loadings. The presented chapter has described fatigue-loading types in engine components. Then, on behalf of failures experienced in the engine-testing laboratory, the chapter has been continued with two case studies on cracked cylinder heads and damaged valves in internal combustion engines. These examples include a failure analysis of damaged components (including the cylinder head and the intake vale).
