Opportunities for the utilization of alternative species in secondary wood manufacturing

A mail survey of the secondary wood products industry was conducted to assess current species use and market potential for alternative species. Seven secondary wood products industries were evaluated forthis research: cabinet, flooring, millwork, office furniture, dimension and component, window and door, and household furniture. Results indicated that collectively these industries are using a majority of traditional species to manufacture their products. Oak, which included the use of both red and white oak, was the most popular species. There is potential to use alternative species in all industries surveyed. The millwork industry displayed the most alternative species use. The office furniture industry also displayed potential for alternative species.
