Power cable fault location based on mathematical morphology and wavelet theory

Power cables and overhead lines are the backbone of power systems. In order to ensure the safe operation of these cables and lines, quick and accurate fault location is particularly important .The head of the reflected wave initiated by a fault is hard to identify, this is a key point in cable fault location and is the subject of this paper. Mathematical morphology and wavelet analysis theory are introduced to improve the travelling wave fault location. They are combined to filter out the noise in the travelling wave signal. Singularity detection is used to find the exact arrival time of the wave. A fault model has been created in MATLAB and simulation results show that the improved method can identify the head of reflection wave accurately ,thus improving the accuracy of fault location.
