Abstract : Failure criteria for aggregate-surfaced pavements subject to vehicular and aircraft loadings are developed. The criteria determine the required thickness making use of the layered elastic design procedure. A literature study was conducted to determine existing design procedures that might be applicable. Types of distresses in aggregate pavements were identified. Those basic parameters that influence performance were defined. Efforts were made to compare the existing design procedures using hypothetical design conditions, and the differences between the procedures were discussed. The technique of reliability analysis was applied on the design procedures. It was found that the reliabilities of some procedures were very low. Field tests on subgrade soils covered with high strength aggregates are recommended. The tests are necessary for the verification of developed failure criteria.
