Structural Study of Polarization Reversal in NaNO2

The polarization reversal process is investigated on the basis of the crystal structure accurately determined by X-ray structure analysis at 170°C in the paraelectric phase. It is concluded from the anisotropic character of the atomic thermal vibrations that polarization reversal is achieved by rotation of the NO 2 radical about the c -axis associated with the displacement of the Na atom along the b -axis. No significant residual electron density is found on a difference Fourier map to indicate that the atoms are on the way to another equilibrium position with a remarkably small probability.
