17 – Batter Piles

Publisher Summary Batter piles are used for bridge abutments, retaining walls, and platforms. Batter piles are capable of resisting significant lateral forces. Lateral resistance of batter piles comes from two sources—horizontal component of the axial reaction and horizontal resistance due to soil (H). Batter piles should be avoided in situations where negative skin frictional forces can be present. Settling soil could induce large bending moments in batter piles.
