An empirical formula, continuous in field parameters and depth, for the axial dose for 60Co gamma radiation

The automatic computation of dose distributions in radiotherapy is simplified by the use of analytical expressions for the radiation fields. Various authors (Pfalzner, 1960; Sterling, Perry and Katz, 1964; Kalnaes, 1966; Sterling, Perry and Weinkam, 1967; Richter, 1967; Onai, Irifune and Tomaru, 1967; Glover, 1969; Koplow, Feldman and Spira, 1969; Milanesi et al., 1969; Thomas 1970; Melski, 1970) have published formulae for the calculation of 60Co axial depth dose, but none of these expressions is sufficiently precise and, at the same time, continuous in depth as well in field dimension and source-surface distance. By computer analysis of depth dose data we have derived a fairly simple expression which satisfies these requirements.
