Basedon the resultsof threeexperiments, we arguethatnative speakers of Japanesearefasterin decidingthata word appearedin asentencepreviously readif the word wasinsidea scrambledconstituent(contraryto prior resultswhichwearguedid notuseanappropriatecontrolsentence). Theresultsarecompatiblewith theproposalthata filler-gapdependenc y betweenthescrambledconstituentandits basepositionhasto becreated whenthesentenceis processed.
