An examination of articles in the eight leading management information systems journals: 1980–1988

Abstract Researchers within the management information systems (MIS) discipline display an on-going concern with rating professional journals. These ratings appear to have merit as indicators of academic excellence, in faculty recruitment, and in various administrative decisions. The purpose of the current paper is to add to the existing body of knowledge in this area. The study analyzes 817 articles published in what frequently-cited MIS researchers rank as the 8 leading journals in the discipline. It discloses the number of MIS-related articles published by each journal in each of the nine years included in the study (1980–1988). It also reveals the 60 leading MIS researchers, based on prorated scores, and which journals publish their work. Additionally, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) subject classification scheme, as presented in Computing Surveys , is employed to identify and discuss the most and least heavily researched topic areas in MIS.
