The timely execution of a construction project is very important to the owner, who makes commitments and plans based on the project's anticipated completion data. Failure of a design professional to consider how the design will be implemented by a builder can result in scheduling problems and delays during the construction process. The purpose of this paper is to increase the awareness of architects and engineers as to the impact that a design's constructability has on a project's construction schedule and cost as well as to other possible consequences for the owner. This paper also discusses strategies that architects and engineers can use to improve constructability and minimize design-related problems during the construction process.
