Abstract : Attrition of enlisted personnel during first tour enlistment has become a major area of concern in the all-volunteer U.S. Navy. Attrition from the 'A' school training environment was perceived to be a part of the overall attrition problem. This study investigated 147 A1 and A3 Navy courses to: identify factors associated with academic attrition; identify the extent and pattern of attrition in these courses; and determine the overall and specific cost of academic and nonacademic attrition. Extensive data are provided on over 20 variables. Major variables are academic attrition, nonacademic attrition, qualified inputs, unqualified inputs, and cost per equivalent graduate.
