The benefit and the restoration procedure of 1:N protected wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) system, which can reduce the cost of the system, is proposed. To implement it, a unique wavelength is assigned as a protection channel and it should be able to be dropped at any add-drop multiplexer (ADM) node in case of the original channel failure. A novel structure of an ADM, which is suitable for 1:N protected WDM system, is proposed, also. The performance of the proposed scheme is presented.
