Novel 2D-Electromagnetic Crystal Waveguide in Microwave Printed Circuit Technology

In this paper we present the design and experimental results of a new class of 2D Electromagnetic Crystal defect based waveguide constructed in microwave printed circuit technology and with microstrip line input and output. Both simulation and experimental results show that it appears in this structure a guided frequency band, broader than the intrinsic Photonic Band Gap, with very low leakage losses. The leakage loss increases drastically as the frequency moves outside this guided band. The technique proposed in this paper constitutes a very easy way to produce a 2D Electromagnetic Crystal compatible with the microwave printed circuit technology and it can be applied to design new waveguides and devices for the microwave and millimetre wave community.
