Determination of total soil and plant nitrogen using a micro-distillation unit in a continuous flow analyzer

Abstract A procedure for the automated determination of soil and plant nitrogen from Kjeldahl digests has been proposed. The continuous flow system involved the use of a unique micro-distillation unit followed by colourimetric detection of the pure ammonium chloride distillate. Optimisation of the indophenol reaction is shown together with a standard manual procedure for comparison. Interference-free determinations may be carried out at a minimum of 30 samples h −1 and the system has proved to be most reliable for routine analysis.
