Target-space anom aliesand elliptic indicesin heterotic orbifolds

A bstract: W epresenta com pletestring theory analysisofallm ixed gauge,gravitationaland target-spaceanom aliespotentially arising in thesim plestheterotic ZN orbifold m odels,with N odd and standard embedding. These anom alies turn out to beencoded in an ellipticindex,which can beeasily com puted;they arefound to cancelthrough auniversalGS m echanism induced by thedilaton multiplet.Thetarget-space sym m etry isthen shown to have a nice geom etric interpretation in term s oftorsion,and the target-space dependence ofthe four-dim ensionalGS couplings can bealternatively rederived from theim plicittorsion dependence ofthestandard ten-dim ensionalGS couplings.
