Trap Detection of Stored-Grain Insects in Farm-Stored, Shelled Corn

The detection of insects infesting farm-stored, shelled corn was improved with the use of traps as compared with conventional probing methods. The ratios of trap to probe detection at six sites within a bin ranged between 1.13:1 and 7.0:1 for Cryptolestes spp., Ahasverus advena (Waltl), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), Typhaea stercorea (L.), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), and Cynaeus angustus (LeConte). Trap to probe detection ratios among paired observations ranged between 2.87:1 and 31.0:1, and for mean insect catch ranged between 36.5:1 and 630.0:1. Traps frequently detected insect species when paired probe samples had zero insect catches. The converse was not true.
