A Parametric Model of Alternative File Structures

Abstract Two parameters which succinctly categorize alternative storage structures are identified. A space of alternative file structures is described by these parameters; standard file structures represent extreme points in this space. The relation of this model to a more traditional list structured model is analyzed. The use of the model in performance estimation is discussed.
