On the different interpretations of Chinese adverb “又”

Within the framework of Formal Semantics, the paper claims that the Chinese adverb “you” possesses two semantic features, “repetitive” and “restitutive”. The discussion centers around the fact that “repetitiveness”, based on grammatically specified entailments, has the great power of interpretation and the mood conveyed by “you” is triggered by “restitutive”. The scope of “you” varies, which results in the reanalysis of “you” as verb adverb, V(erb)P(hrase) adverb and S(entence) adverb in the paper. Having made a contrastive study of IA model and IP model, the paper accounts for the data on the basis of IP model, a model with many advantages and much practicability in the research on Chinese grammar.
