Closed loop implementation and design of a novel controller for 48 V resonant voltage regulator modules

This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the physical interpretation, and the implementation of a new controller for the resonant based 4W voltage regulator module (VRM). The new controller is named as "self-sustained oscillation control (SSOC)" and is used to achieve the specifications of the future voltage VRMs as per the requirements of the International Technology and Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) (www.itrs.com). It is a new current mode controller for resonant converter, hence offers lower power component ratings than with the conventional variable frequency controller and fast transient response as well as a reasonable efficiency. Analytical, simulation and experimental results are presented to offer the proof of concept.
