Sizing and fit of bra's

It is often reported that 70% or more of women wear the wrong-sized bra. A fact is that many women complain about bra fit even though the number of available sizes varies from 20 to 100. Sizing of bras is based on under bust circumference and its difference with circumference over the bust (cup size). Data will be presented on the variability of these dimensions worldwide, partly derived from the CAESAR project. As previously reported, a poor relation exists between the dimensions and the selected bra size. Multiple regression analysis shows unfortunately that the inclusion of age and other onedimensionial parameters does not improve the relation between reported cup size and calculated cup size. In WEAR, three dimensional data will also be available. An example is given how to estimate bust volume reliably from 3D scans and how volume relates to cup size. Also, it will be shown how wearing a bra changes the profile of the bust. The challenge we face is how to incorporate 3D bust shape into the design of bra's. There is a renewed interest in the literature of which a short review will be given, but still a long way to go to. The bust shape is not only important for bra design, but also for the fit of blouses and, more in the military domain, the shape of bullet protective ceramic plates in female protective vests. Examples of research projects in this related field will be presented as well.
