Non-Equilibrium Dynamic Traffic Assignment

Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA) models basically follow two approaches: simulation and analytical. The simulation approach relies on microscopic driving behavior in terms of car following and lane-changing rules to model traffic flow or the mesoscopic approach to move individual vehicles based on the speed-density relationship. As far as the underlying traffic assignment principle is concerned, the approach may adopt elaborate rules to model route choice behavior at the level of individual vehicles. As the emphasis of the simulation approach is not on analytical tractability, strict adherence to the notion of an “equilibrium” route choice principle is often not the primary focus. The end result is that, at the system level, the traffic assignment solutions obtained many not exhibit well-defined properties, in terms of uniqueness or satisfying the notion of an equilibrium principle, such as a dynamic extension of Wardrop’s principle or the dynamic user optimal (DUO) principle.
