Islam and the District Paradigm [Comments and Reply]

[CURRENT ANTHROPOLOGY received and accepted an article from Akbar S. Ahmed entitled "Islam and the District Paradigm: Emergent Trends in Contemporary Muslim Society," which was duly circulated to commentators in the normal fashion. However, the article was published in the Middle East Journal (vol. 36, no. 2 [Spring 1982], pp. 184-203) under the title "Order and Conflict in Muslim Society: A Case Study from Pakistan," with only minor variations of wording. There is also substantial overlap of material in an article published in Arab Studies Quarterly (vol. 4, nos. 1 and 2 [Spring 1982], pp. 127 ff.) under the title "Mullah, Mahdi, and Mosque: Emergent Trends in Muslim Society." In view of the competition for space in CURRENT ANTHROPOLOGY, and in view of our policy of republishing articles only in the most special circumstances, the article was withdrawn from publication. The best reference is to the Middle East Journal. In fairness to the author, however, and in recognition of the considerable work that the commentators have applied to his article, the comments and Ahmed's reply to them are published below.-EDITOR.]
