Mitigating the Vibration on UHV Converter Transformer during Rails Movement by a New Cart

A converter transformer in Ultra-high Voltage (UHV) electrical substation has weight larger than 500 ton. Quick installation of the equipment requires to move it in full assembly. The vibration in the moving process had an un-negligible influence on stable operation of the converter transformer. The newly designed transportation cart, with new design of cart frame, buffer device and independent wheel groups, show improved load carrying capacity and vibration control effect. In the vibration test, the peak acceleration at the top of transformer's main body was 0.32g and the acceleration at the top of bushing was 0.09g. The decreasing rate of acceleration reached 80% compared to that of the moving process when a common cart was used, and vibration induced stress was as low as 3% of the failure stress. The results show that the newly designed transportation cart is effective in controlling the vibration in the moving process.
