Indoorenvironmental satisfaction hasbeen receiving considerable attention bymany researchers recently. Research hasindicated thatallowing building occupants to adjusttheirlocalenvironment to theirliking increases satisfaction andhumanperformance. However, concern about thepossible increase ofenergyconsumption associated withthe wideadoption ofdistributed localized environmental control has limited theuse ofsuchsystems. Inthisstudy, we showhow gradient-based optimization can beusedtominimize energy consumption of distributed environmental controlsystems without increasing occupant thermal dissatisfaction. Fuzzyrules havebeengenerated by datafromgradient optimization, showing thata fuzzylogic control schemebasedon nearest neighbors approximates closely thegradient-based optimized results.
