Frequency modulation synthesis

The presence of texture substantially increases the reality in the synthesized image. However, the synthesis of texture has been computationally expensive. This paper describes a method for texture synthesis by means of frequency modulation. Frequency modulation synthesis technique is an inexpensive approach to approximate complex waveforms. A waveform is frequency-modulated by another waveform. This modulation process produces sideband frequncies which occur at multiples of the modulation frequency. The sidebands add complexity to the initial waveform. Only a few control parameters are required to control the frequency modulation. Natural phenomena such as clouds, terrain, and aurora borealis can also be synthesized.
