Numerical Simulation of Filling Process on Magnesium Alloy Steering Column Bracket

The three-dimensional software was used to build a three-dimensional solid model of steering column bracket and the Flow-3D software was used to simulate the oxide film and gas entrapment on the bottom gating system and parting gating system. The simulation results show that the bottom gating system is better than the parting gating system. Therefore, the bottom gating system was adopted in this experiment. The filling simulation on bottom gating system was implemented to predict the possible position where the oxide film and gas entrapment would appear, and the change of temperature at different filling time was confirmed. The oxide film and the gas entrapment at different pouring temperature and sand baking temperature were simulated to choose the optimal technological conditions. The simulated results show that with the pouring temperature of 700 ℃ and baking temperature of 200 ℃, the optimal pouring effects can be obtained. Actual casting reached the desired results and the simulation results are ideal.
