Band structure in 81Y and its radioactive decay

Bands of states in 81Y have been identified by using a particle-gamma coincidence technique following the 58Ni(28Si, alpha p)81Y reaction at beam energies of 80-130 MeV. A probable sequence of spins for the states is presented, and these data are compared with systematic trends in this region. The data indicate that the nucleus has a large prolate deformation. The radioactive decay of 81Y to 81Sr was reinvestigated by interrupting the beam and observing the population of states in 81Sr.
