Optical Emission from O(1D) and O2(b 1Σg) in Ultraviolet Photolysis of O2 and CO2

Improved optical techniques have been applied to the detection of excited states produced by uv photolysis of O2 and CO2; this has led to a revision of some of the results reported in an earlier paper by Noxon. We now find quenching of O(1D) by CO2 to be somewhat faster than by O2 or N2, in agreement with most other investigations. Improved measurements of O(1D) emission in O2 photolysis have been made but we have been unable to repeat the observation of emission from O(1D) and O(1S) in CO2 photolysis reported earlier.
