Energy impact of the future Fibre optics access networks: Economic perspectives

In this paper we report an experimental investigation about power consumption on access networks belonging to a wide geographical network test bed. The access components are mainly based on FTTx architectures and contain GPON, EPON, VDSL2, P2P and ADSL2+ systems. The results show that GPON is the most energy efficient access network. We also show energy saving impacts on economics of future optical networks.
