This is a very informal introduction to the 1996 ICPP Workshop on Challenges for Parallel Processing. This workshop is held in conjunction with the 1996 International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP). The purpose of this introduction is to explain the origins of this year?s workshop and its format, to give an overview of these proceedings, and to provide biographical information on the workshop speakers and session organizers. The efforts of those who made this workshop and its proceedings possible are acknowledged in the preface to these proceedings.
