Application of Probe Data Collected Via Infrared Beacons to Traffic Management

This paper describes a study of using probe data for traffic management. The authors equipped nearly one hundred taxis traveling around the center of Yokohama City with onboard units. The onboard units communicate via infrared beacons on the roadside to allow the collection of the probe data transmitted from the equipped vehicles. The results suggest that the probe data of only one hundred taxis can be successfully applied to traffic management if probe data are accumulated for sufficiently long periods of time and are used in combination with vehicle detector data.
