Comparison of fibre and coaxial link for access network in microcellular PCS

The Letter examines the feasibility of using coaxial cable as against a fibre link for the access network of future microcellular personal communication systems. It is shown that while for link lengths longer than 1.4 km, coaxial cable cannot be used as it cannot provide sufficient carrier/noise ratio, for microcells needing shorter communication links than 1 km coaxial cable and fibre may both be feasible solutions.
