Allocation of the UPFC to enhance the damping of power oscillations

Abstract On the basis of the linearized Phillips–Heffron model of a power system, we approach the problem of select the best input control signal of the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) in order to enhance the damping of power oscillations. A technique is proposed to select the best location for Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices and the best input control signal, in order to get the major impact on the damping of the electromechanical modes of concern. Nonlinear simulations on a multimachine power system are carried out verifying the goodness of the technique.
