The story on this year's National Chemistry Week (NCW), which will be in next week's issue of C&EN, will be liberally illustrated with pictures of children and youngsters being beguiled, fascinated, and delighted by presentations of what science, especially chemistry, is all about. These pictures represent just the tip of the iceberg that is the enormous annual commitment by thousands of ACS members to getting out to the public the word that chemistry is a very good thing. Next April will bring the opening of another huge effort to educate the public about science—the ACS-sponsored "Science in American Life" exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Showcasing the past 125 years of science and technology in the U.S. and the interaction with American society, it will be seen by millions of visitors every year for many years to come.
