Effects of extinction with a compound conditioned stimulus

In 3 experiments, extinction was conducted with a compound conditioned stimulus. For Experiment 1, the compound was composed of elements that had separately taken part in conditioning. The loss of the conditioned properties of the elements in these circumstances was slower than if they were presented alone during extinction. In Stage 1 of Experiments 2 and 3, reinforced trials with a compound AB were intermixed with nonreinforced presentations of A (Experiment 2) or A and B (Experiment 3). This training was followed by conditioning trials with A and then extinction with AB
