Inducing Translation Grammars from Bracketed Alignments

This chapter presents a method for generating and filtering translation grammars from bilingually aligned and linguistically bracketed texts. Three desirable properties of translation grammars are discussed in detail. Homomorphic translation grammars enable a 1-to-1 mapping from the source language to the target language. Invertible translation grammars produce exactly one target language expression for each source language derivation tree. Compositional translation grammars recursively decompose the source language expression into segments which are translated independently of their context.
