Virtual Trip: Omni-Directional Photo Database Using Probe Cars

This article outlines the development of an omni-directional photo database by a Japanese automotive technology company. The purpose of the technology, involving data which is collected by probe cars, is used to essentially preview route choice using actual images rather than maps or satellite imaging. The collected data is then uploaded to probe centers where it is compiled and organized according to linked geographical and positioning information about the probe car such that it can be used for the specified purposes. The camera used takes a 360 degree angle image, which provides operators with a maximum of information. The format provided to the end user displays a map of the destination coupled with a panoramic image, allowing for what is described as a virtual drive through for accurate trip logistics.
