Experimental study on geopolymeric recycled concrete used as sustainable construction material

Geopolymer concrete is known as one of environmental-friendly construction materials. Using by-product material such as fly ash replace cement would avoid carbon dioxide (CO2) emission during the manufacturing process of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Meanwhile, recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is also an effective way to solve the shortage of nature resources problem and avoid environmental pollution caused by landfill. Taken these two factors into account, this paper describes a study on physical and mechanical properties of recycled aggregate (RA) and fly ash-based geopolymer concrete (GRC), based on six mixtures concrete design. The main mechanical properties of this new concrete are investigated by a series of experiments with various RA replacement ratios. The mechanical behaviors of OPC, RAC and GRC are compared and discussed. The experimental results are useful for further study on structural performance of steel tubes filled with concrete to act as columns in buildings.
