Synthetic concrete pore solution chemistry and rebar corrosion rate in the presence of chlorides

Abstract Synthetic concrete pore solutions containing 0, 0.1, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 N in chloride ion, in the form of NaCl or CaCl 2 , ranging from pH = 11.64 to pH = 13.22, were characterized through measurements of their pH values, ionic strength, resistivity and [Cl − ]/[OH − ] ratio. The interdependence between these bulk chemical parameters have been established. The variation of instantenous corrosion intensity in time has been followed by the electrochemical technique of Resistance Polarization (Rp). Reasonable interdependence between bulk chemical parameters and mean corrosion intensity (μa. cm−2) values have been found.
