The Problem of Quiescent Period Prediction for Ships: A Review

Abstract The prediction of time intervals in which ship motions are sufficiently small –quiescent periods-is important for several purposes. For instance, it is a relevant aid for helicopter landing on ships. There have been important efforts for ship motion prediction in real time. The first approaches were based on analysis of recent records of ship motion. Recently new measurement methods have been introduced, which measure wave height from distance. In this way the prediction horizon has increased. The paper reviews the problem, with a brief historical account of initial approaches and with more detail about new developments.
