PULMONARY HEMORRHAGE-GLOMERULONEPHRITIS SYNDROME; RELATIONSHIP TO GOODPASTURE'S SYNDROME WITH REPORT OF A CASE IN 9-YEAR-OLD GIRL.

The association of pulmonary hemorrhage and glomerulonephritis has been reported with increasing frequency in recent years. Various designations have been ascribed to this pathologic state such as "Goodpasture's syndrome," 1-6 "hemorrhagic and interstitial pneumonitis with nephritis," 7 and "lung purpura with nephritis." 8,9 The possible relationship of this disorder to idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis and polyarteritis nodosa has been considered. The clinical manifestations of pulmonary hemorrhage and glomerulonephritis appear similar in these three conditions. Similar pathologic features in the lungs and kidneys have been observed and mentioned frequently. This report deals with the occurrence of a fatal pulmonary hemorrhage-glomerulonephritis syndrome in a 9-year-old girl whose illness, we believe, represents Goodpasture's syndrome. Renal biopsy was done during the course of the disease. Report of a Case The patient was well until 8 years of age when a febrile illness with cough and lethargy developed.
