Adaptive Characteristics of the Magnetostrictive Alloy, Terfenol-D, for Active Vibration Control

The recently developed "Giant" magnetostrictive material, Terfenol-D, has been applied to development of a new class of adaptive actuators for vibration control. Terfenol-D offers the highest strain (ΔL/L > 10-3) and energy density (1.4-2.5 x 104 J/m3) of any commercially available material.
