What Is Next

Due to its reversible nature, deep brain stimulation allows for the exploration of a greater number of anatomical structures and can therefore increase the number of psychiatric pathologies that can be ameliorated with psychosurgical intervention. It is probable that the progress seen in nanotechnology, biology, information technology, and cognitive sciences will lead to a paradigm shift for the treatments of certain mental illnesses that are currently at a therapeutic impasse. This progress may in turn lead to attempts not only to heal patients, but augment healthy individuals as well.
