Supervisory Control for Energy Storage System Onboard Aircraft

Supervisory strategies for the More Electric Aircraft are considered in this paper. The main goal of the proposed approach is to operate a Buck-Boost Converter as a bidirectional regulable power bridge between a low voltage and a high voltage busses. This strategy makes possible different electric energy flows onboard, that can be utilised to charge batteries and handle overload situations. Moreover, in the case of continued severe overload exceeding battery energy storage capabilities, partial shedding of (noncritical) loads is considered. The supervisor is designed to integrate and coordinate the above situations. Rigorous mathematical proofs of stability are given, and a detailed simulator with switching devices and accurate models of the battery is used to assess effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach.
