The Hydraulic Fracturing Method of Stress Measurement: Theory and Practice

Publisher Summary Hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracturing, is the best-known method of assessing the state of in situ stress at great depths. In the last two decades it has become an indispensable tool in the preexcavation design of large underground projects such as hydroelectric powerhouses, tunnels, mines, waste disposal galleries, energy storage caverns, etc. It has been increasingly used in the planning of oil and gas fields and the design of wellbore stimulation. It has also become a requisite field measurement in tectonophysics research, and in earthquake prediction, mechanism and control studies. Conventional hydraulic fracturing stress measurements have generally been very successful and have provided crustal stress information that is consistent with other measurements, as well as other stress indicators, or observations.
