When the difference between front and rear wheel steering angles exceeds a predetermined value, the rear wheel steering means is actuated to eliminate the difference. The predetermined value is modified in response to vehicle speed and defending upon whether the vehicle velocity is low or high, the rear wheels are steered in the same sense as the opposite sense to front wheels. If the gear transmission unit is set in a high velocity mode (by detecting position of shift lever), the rear wheels are steered to a neutral position. The rear wheel steering means can be locked in the neutral position and this locked condition detected to modify the steering signal. A time delay is introduced to inhibit a steering signal for the rear wheels if the lock signal is not received.
