SAFETY OF SHIP LOADING SYSTEMS FOR LIQUIDS

Pressure surge problems in ship loading systems due to the closure of emergency and automatic shut-down valves have been intensively studied at the Delft Hydraulics Laboratory. Surge analysis has been performed for loading systems with high capacities and emergency valves with short closing times in the order of two to ten seconds. The option of using devices such as relief valves and accumulators as a solution to the pressure surge problem is discussed in this paper and illustrated by a case study.
