PLANKTON PATCHINESS: EFFECTS ON REPEATED NET TOWS1

Simulated net tows in a computer model of a body of water containing aggregations of individuals demonstrated that the size and distribution of the patches significantly affects both the accuracy and the precision of estimates of abundance. A comparison between tows taken with nets of 25, loo-, and 200-cm diameter showed that, in general, estimates from the largest net were the most accurate ancl precise.
