Exciter model reduction and validation for large-scale power system dynamic security assessment

Reduction of the complexity of dynamic units such as excitation systems is one of key factors for large-scale power system dynamic simulations demanding high computation speed. In this paper comprehensive AC/DC type excitation system models which are available in power industry, are simplified to first- and second-order reduced models using frequency domain based model reduction methods. The simplified exciter models are tested for a large-scale power system. The accuracy of critical clearing time (CCT) estimate of the reduced models is compared with that of original models for selected contingencies. Numerical results show that the simplified exciter models provide a fairly accurate representation of the original comprehensive models.
