Vibrational relaxation of carbon monoxide using a pulsed discharge

A cw probe laser is used to monitor the time‐dependent gain on vibrational transitions of CO following a short‐pulse transverse discharge in a cell at room temperature. The initial vibrational distribution of excited CO produced by the discharge is measured, and the subsequent relaxation, producing gain on some bands, is used to determine vibrational transfer rates for the relaxation processes CO(ν) + CO(ν = 0) → CO(ν − 1) + CO(ν = 1), 2 ≤ ν ≤ 15.
